Porsche 550 Spyder

James Dean owned this car named the “Little Bastard”. He raced the Porsche 550 Spyder and eventually died in a car crash while driving to a race. He was killed when his Porsche 550 Spyder collided with a sedan traveling in the opposite direction.

While enroute that fatal day, Dean was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol and issued a speeding ticket for 10mph over. Dean was estimated driving at 85+mph when the collision occurred.

He had ordered a Lotus to race but the Lotus did not show up in time so he purchased the Porsche 550 Spyder as its replacement. He claimed the cars top speed to be 150mph.

British actor Alec Guinness warned Dean “don’t get into that car, if you do, you will be dead by next week.”

Dean was barely alive after the crash and died shortly thereafter. The salvage Porsche 550 Spyder was sold off to numerous entities, one being George Barris the King of Custom cars, disappearing thereafter.
