1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale

The early days of Ferrari production vehicles were filled with coach-built bodies, and this 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa is one of just two from Vignale in this style. No Vignale body design fitted to a Ferrari was built in more than about a dozen copies, with many designs being used far fewer times.

Ferrari almost never styled their cars or built the bodies themselves during these early years, and accordingly, there were no standardized designs for what a Ferrari looked like.

In many ways, the Europa was Ferrari’s first grand touring car. Interiors were no less spectacular, with rich materials, occasionally lurid color schemes, and a wealth of decorative touches such as engraved silver and chrome trim on the dashboard, doors, switchgear, and ashtrays.

The 250 Europa brandished a Lampredi V12 derived from Ferrari's Formula 1 racing efforts of the day. Paired down slightly to 3.0 liters, it was crowned with three Weber carburetors and produced a raspy, aggressive exhaust note. The Lampredi engine is physically larger and heavier than the Columbo V12 engine which employs screw-in cylinder liners which allow the cylinder bore and thus displacement to be adjusted with relative ease.

With most old Ferraris having Pinin farina bodies and Colombo engines, a Vignale/Lampredi Ferrari certainly stands out in an already exquisite crowd.
